Steam power plant processSteam power plant process

Steam power plant process schematic

In a steam power plant coal (or oil or gas) is burned and the hot combustion gas is used to produce superheated steam in a boiler. The superheated steam is expanded through a steam turbine providing power to drive a generator. Steam power plant cycles are characterized by the pressure level they are operated at subcritical cycles use pressures below the critical pressure of H₂O while supercritical cycles operate above the critical pressure providing higher efficiency. High environmental standards will be met by special flue gas treatment depending on the fuel type.
