Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)

Carbon Capture Technologies
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), a new technology route to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, is currently under develop-ment and many pilot projects have been initiated throughout the world. CCS covers capturing of CO₂ from the flue gases emitted by fossil power generation, transportation of the CO₂ to the storage site and injection and safe storage of the CO₂ in underground geological formations.
For CCS three capture technology routes are available or under development (target: capture rates > 90%):
- Pre-Combustion Capture as applied in the
Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (from coal to synthesis gas)
- Post-Combustion Capture ("end-of-pipe" removal of CO₂ from exhaust gas)
- Oxyfuel technology (fuel is burned with oxygen and recycling of CO₂ rich flue gas)
Siemens Carbon Capture Technologies
Siemens is primarily investing in Pre- and Post-combustion CCS technology. For Pre-Combustion Capture the Siemens IGCC technology is ready for implementation.
For Post-Combustion Capture we have under development a new Siemens technology which will be ready for the implementation in the upcoming demonstration projects. In addition, Siemens has established partnerships for the development and implementation of other Carbon Capture technologies, e.g. with Powerspan (ECO₂-Capture technology).
