Siemens to refurbish and upgrade turbine island for the Watts Bar 2 Nuclear Power Plant

The order value is more than USD170 million

Erlangen, Germany, December 05, 2007

Siemens Power Generation (PG) has received an order from Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the nation’s largest public power provider, to refurbish and upgrade the turbine island of the Watts Bar 2 Nuclear Plant in Spring City, Tennessee. Construction on the Watts Bar 2 Plant was initially started in the 1970s, but, according to TVA, was never fully completed due to a reduction in predicted growth of power demand. TVA recently approved completion of the plant as the best and most efficient solution to meet the growing energy needs of the region. When completed, the Watts Bar 2 Plant is expected to generate more than 1,200 megawatts (MW) of power to serve 650,000 homes in the Tennessee Valley area. The order value is more than USD170 million.

The Watts Bar Plant Unit 2 consists of one pressurized-water reactor and is sited next to Unit 1, which began commercial operation in 1996, and was the last nuclear unit licensed to operate in the U.S. The Siemens scope of supply for Unit 2 includes one new high-pressure (HP) turbine; three new low-pressure (LP) turbines; complete modernization of the generator, including a RIGI-FLEX™ rewind of the stator and new retaining rings; exciter rotor refurbishment; six new moisture separator reheaters; plus multiple other components and more than 40,000 individual replacement parts. The HP turbine is planned for delivery in August 2009, and the three LP turbines in June 2010.

“We are pleased to be supporting the Tennessee Valley Authority in its efforts to better meet the current and future electricity needs of its customers,” said Randy Zwirn, president and CEO of Siemens Power Generation, Inc. and member of the PG Group Executive Committee. “This order is evidence that nuclear power plants continue to play an important role in the diverse mix of environmentally compatible sources of power generation. With the uncertain costs and very long lead times associated with building new plants, the installed base is of high value in our overall energy mix.”

Siemens has performed or received orders for 24 HP turbine modernizations and 53 LP turbine modernizations for nuclear power plants since 2000.

“TVA has selected Siemens as the most cost effective solution for completing the work needed to maximize electric output and provide a reliable and efficient turbine generator for Watts Bar 2,” said Jerry Schlessel, TVA’s construction manager for the project.
