Siemens received follow-up order for the expansion of the power distribution system in Hong Kong

After successful completion of its first supply system expansion project in Hong Kong, Siemens Energy has now received a follow-up order from China Light and Power (CLP), the largest power supply company in Hong Kong. Over the next five years, Siemens will further modernize and expand the medium-voltage distribution network of China’s third largest metropolitan region. China Light and Power supplies around 80 percent of the population of Hong Kong with electrical power. The latest order worth about USD 300 million comprises the delivery, installation and commissioning of about 2000 turnkey distribution substations with gas-insulated 11-kV medium-voltage switchgear.
“On the strength of a precise analysis of the network operator’s requirements and of local factors, market situation and infrastructure, we have developed a tailored network automation solution, based on our engineering expertise and experience, which we are implementing rapidly,” said Ralf Christian, CEO of the Power Distribution Division in the Siemens Energy Sector.
The gas-insulated medium-voltage switchgear that Siemens is to deliver to Hong Kong ready for installation and connection will meet the high supply reliability standards expected by China Light and Power. The switchgear design includes fully welded corrosion-free stainless steel containers. These allow switchgear to operate without maintenance and largely independently of the outside climate at temperatures of 40° C in summer and air humidity of nearly 98 percent. Siemens will equip the approximately 2000 distribution substations with this switchgear design as part of the order. These substations will also supply electricity to the International Commerce Centre currently under construction. 490 meters tall and with 118 floors, the International Commerce Centre – which is scheduled for completion in 2010 – will be the tallest building in Hong Kong and the third tallest building in the world.
In 2001 China Light and Power commissioned Siemens to modernize and expand Hong Kong’s power distribution network for the first time. In the course of this contract, which had a total duration of seven years, more than 2500 turnkey medium- voltage distribution substations were constructed. The order, worth over EUR 250 million, also included the delivery of the transformers and the telecontrol system.
