Successful implementation of Siemens control systems at Bergen and Desert Basin Generating Stations

Siemens Power Generation successfully installed the state-of-the-art SPPA-T3000 control system at the Bergen Generating Station in Ridgefield, NJ, and the Desert Basin Generating Station in Casa Grande, AZ. The SPPA-T3000 is the forth generation distributed control system, specifically designed to implement the power plant and turbine control on a common control platform. It is the first fully web-based system which integrates functionalities like operation, engineering, diagnostics, archive, alarm and field devices into one single ease-to-use platform.

The scope of supply for the Bergen Generating Station included migration of the existing control systems of the four Siemens SGT6-2000E simple cycle gas turbines to the SPPA-T3000, and turnkey service of installation, start up and commissioning. The OEM application software was also installed. The first upgraded unit started commercial operation on November 15, 2006, and the second upgraded unit finished commissioning on April 14, 2007.

The scope of supply for the Desert Basin Generating Station included migration of the existing control systems of the two Siemens SGT6-5000F gas turbines to the SPPA-T3000, an Availability-Reliability-Improvement (ARI) package, spare parts and on-site technical field assistance. Full-load tests for the first upgraded unit were successfully completed on April 21, 2007.

The upgrades to the new SPPA-T3000 control system at the Bergen and Desert Basin Generating Stations will improve the units’ reliability and availability and help extend the life of the plants.
