Coal-to-Liquids process (CTL)

Main air compressor
Alternative sources of ultra-clean liquid fuels are necessitated by rising crude oil prices, combined with stringent environmental specifications for sulfur and aromatics in diesel fuel. The Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) process is an economically robust and environmentally beneficial way of monetizing large coal reserves.
It enables coal-producing countries to achieve a certain degree of independence from importing crude oil.
CTL applications demand innovative solutions with excellence in engineering, maximum lifetime value as well as ultimate compliance with health, safety, environmental, and industry standards.
A CTL plant requires a large number of different compressor trains. Air separation is the single most important part of any CTL plant. Depending on the applied process, large air compressors feed massive volumes of air to the air separation process, which provides oxygen for the gasification of pulverized coal into syngas.
For this application, Siemens offers:
The refining portion of a CTL plant involves a number of diverse processes and applications – from coal gasification, Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and hydrogen production to product upgrading.
For these applications, Siemens offers:
- Natural gas booster STC-SV or STC-SH
- Syngas booster STC-SV or STC-SH
- Compressors for recycle gas, syngas, propane, regeneration gas, recontacting STC-SV or
STC-SH
- Blowers for sulfur recovery
